Should I Breed

Answer these questions to yourself HONESTLY.

As a breeder, you are responsible for bringing new life into this world and even when a puppy leaves your home, it is still "yours". Remember there are legalities involved when selling puppies to the public and you may be held responsible for health and/or behavioral problems that may develop later.

  1. Is your dog a purebred?
If yes, proceed to next question. If no, GET YOUR PET NEUTERED!
  2. Where did you get your dog?
If your answer is from a breeder, continue. If you answered anything but breeder, GET YOUR PET NEUTERED!
  3. Did you get a free 3-5 generation pedigree with your dog?
If yes, continue. If you answered no, GET YOUR PET NEUTERED!
  4. Are there at least 4 titled dogs (confirmation, obedience, tracking, field, etc.) in the 3 MOST RECENT generations (your dog's parents, grandparents & great-grandparents)?
If yes, continue. If you answered no, GET YOUR PET NEUTERED!
  5. Does your dog have a stable temperament?
If yes, continue. If no, GET YOUR PET NEUTERED!
  6. Does your pet fit the breed standard?
If yes, continue. If you answered no, GET YOUR PET NEUTERED!
  7. Is your dog healthy and certified (OFA, CERF) free of genetic diseases?
If yes, continue. If no, GET YOUR PET NEUTERED!
  8. Can the breeder of your dog answer "Yes" to all of these questions?
If yes, Congratulations!!! If no, GET YOUR PET NEUTERED!!
  9. Do you have the medical and financial resources in case of an abnormal whelping (emergency C-section, ruptured placenta, uterine inertia), routine vaccinations, ear cropping and tail docking for 8-10 pups?
If yes, GREAT!! If not, GET YOUR PET NEUTERED!

If you are not active in showing or working your dog, or active in breed clubs, think very carefully about your reason for breeding. Breeding should be done to IMPROVE THE BREED, not so the kids can see puppies being born, or because you want "a puppy from her," and NEVER to make money selling puppies!!! Remember why you got your dog in the first place, to be a loving life-long companion for your family.

PLEASE .... DON'T BREED OUT OF GREED!!!

Puppies are cute and wonderful but things can and do go wrong even to the most experienced and prepared breeder. Maybe a puppy wouldn't fit with your lifestyle. Try a rescue boxer!! All the boxer love without the housetraining headaches!!
