Named for his father, he had to go far,
However, in no time he was his own rising star.
You caught my eye in Best of Breed
Josh was the kind of dog we would need.
Shining bright in his mistress's eye
It's hard to believe the years have gone by
A proven sire, his get you will see
Proving an acorn doesn't fall far from the tree.
The road to Sire of Merit was often hard to go;
But his mistress was determined to make it so!
A boxer of substance, beauty and grace
Who could resist that wonderful face?
A change of the lead and back in the ring,
A CD title he would also bring.
His time has come, the hour is near
Let all of us here stand up and cheer!
Although his son's will continue the line,
Josh's star alone will forever shine.
Named for his father, he had to go far,
But today Dear Josh, you are the only STAR!

THE OLD SHOW DOG
He always knows - no matter how quietly you get out the leashes, how you smuggle the show bag
out to the car, you're going to a dog show and he knows it. He sits beside the cabinet where the
show gear is stowed as you bustle about attending to the last minute details. His ears flat, a
hopeful gleam in his eyes, he looks at you . It is as close as he will come to begging. You pause
for a moment to rub behind his ears, guilty at leaving him and you think back......
Remember how it was not so terribly long ago, when show dog meant just you and him, striking
out in the early morning before the sun came up to burn away the fog? Everything was bright and
new and life was simple. He was the most beautiful dog in the world, that is before you learned
about angulation and side gait. And your goal then was a ribbon, maybe blue. And now, it's
points and titles - anything less is an expensive disappointment. Once you took pride or found
fault in your own performance, before you became the "Savior of the Breed". Feeling duty-bound
to monitor the strivings of others and politics once applied only to elected officials.
Would you go back again? Maybe not. You move on - its nearly time to go. He gets up to follow
you from room to room - age and arthritis narrowing his limits. You tell him that he will have to
stay home, and turn away before his tail droops slowly to the floor. And so you leave. You see
his head at the window as you drive away. Always remember the nobility of his character and the
trust in his eyes, and vow never to do anything to dishonor him - your old show dog.

THE RETIRED SHOW DOG
He sits to the side, out of the way
While others beg head rubs, or force you to play.
His dark liquid eyes watch your every move
Hoping and waiting, his love to prove.
He was shown many times, a promising pup
And he just got better as he grew up.
A picture of health, robust and strong,
His gait and topline, never went wrong.
But his prime has passed, and he seems to know,
That he'll never again be put in a show.
He eats, he sleeps, not much more than that,
And maybe he's getting a little too fat.
He loves to be brushed, when you have the time,
He waits for his turn at the end of the line.
You think of him, sure, but not nearly as much
As those promising pups, that new special and such.
So he sits and he waits, til you have the time,
To make the same fuss as you did in his prime.
A scrap of affection, or playful shove,
To him it means everything, to him it means LOVE!

PATIENTLY
As I see the Gates of Heaven
And I know I'm headed home
I see the great St. Peter
But alas, he's not alone.
The tears have blurred my vision
But I'd know her anywhere
She sits and waits so patiently
She knows I'll soon be there.
I drop to my knees and call her name
She responds with bounding glee
She whines and she cries
The joy is in her eyes
She's waited so patiently.
I know it's truly Heaven
For that is plain to see
My faithful friend and campanion
Is once again with me.

RAINBOW BRIDGE
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes
to Rainbow Bridge.
There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play
together.
There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and
comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who
were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them
in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss
someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and
looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly
he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him
faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you
cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain
upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more
into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from
your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together...

AT THE END OF RAINBOW BRIDGE
When I Woke up this Morning I Felt Very Odd
I Don't Know Why, but I Felt Close to God
The Sun Was Shining, the Birds Were Singing
The Music Was Soft, the Bells Were Ringing
And Puppies Were Romping at Play
What a Pleasant Start of a Wonderful Day
I Remember Laying down to Take a Nap
I Remember I Had My Head in Her Lap
I Remember the Sad Look in Her Eye
I Remember I Had Never Seen Her Cry.
I Remember I Wanted to Ask Her Why
I Remember Hearing Her Say, Goodbye
I Wanted to Say Don't Cry for Me
I Wanted to Say, Just Remember Me
I Wanted to Say I Remember the Toys
I Wanted to Say I Remember the Joys
I Wanted to Say, I Love You So Much
I Wanted to Say, How I Loved Your Touch
Oh Please Let Me Hug You
Oh Please Let Me Kiss You
Oh Please Let Me Tell You
What an Angel You've Been
Oh Please Let Me Thank You
for Showing Me Him
I Knew When I Woke up
There Would Be No Pain
I Knew If I Wanted to
I Could Play in the Rain
I Knew That I Would Remember
the Love You Gave Me Forever
You've Taken Care of Me
All My Life You've Guarded Me from Trouble and Strife
You've Taken Care of Me thru Good and Bad
You've Always Stopped Me from Feeling Sad
You've Given Me Treats and Given Me Care
You've Told Me What to Expect When I Got There
So Please Don't Cry, Wipe the Tears from Your Eye
I'll Look down upon You and with a Woof and a Sigh
I'll Gather My Courage and March up to God and Ask Him
When You Get Here to Give You a Nod
for You Were My Master and You Were My Friend
and I'll Be Waiting for You at the Rainbows End.

THE STANDARD OF THE BREEDER / OWNER / HANDLER GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS
The ideal is an energetic, far-sighted creature with the courage and perseverance of a hound and natural antipathy for losing. He should appear neither clumsy nor awkward, as a certain amount of speed and agility is essential while doing his thing. He is usually found in packs at dog shows.
HEAD
The width between the ears varies with wins and losses. Surmounted by a topknot of long or short hair, either flat, wavy or rather curly, on occasion may be thinning at the top or completely bald, but the latter is rare on the female. The male is sometimes bearded -- again -- this is rare on the female but not unheard of.
NOSE
A pinkish tinge during the summer months. This should not be penalized on an otherwise first-class specimen.
EARS
In proportion to the head. Ability to listen while in the company of elder and wiser breeders is to be greatly desired.
MOUTH
Large enough to put a foot in. A slight bulge in the jaw denotes a liver bait.
BODY
Short-coupled variety, usually plump and well padded in hindquarters, flabbiness to be penalized. Long-coupled variety, lean and sinewy. Extra size being no disadvantage in either variety provided it does not interfere with freedom of action.
SHOULDERS
Never drooping. Broad enough for slapping or crying on.
BACK
Muscular and strong -- however, occasional stiffness due to leaning over large dogs or crouching behind small dogs is permissible.
CHEST
Room for plenty of heart.
FOREARMS
Flexible and well-muscled, caused by lifting crates, putting up tents, carrying dogs and much grooming.
HANDS
A working specimen will have short chewed nails -- signs of length or loss shall be penalized accordingly.
LEGS AND FEET
Very muscular and flexible. Endurance is not of great importance. Knees well bent and pitted by small stones from kneeling outdoors.
COLOR
Immaterial. Green color denoting envy or red color denoting rage is a disqualification.
TEMPERAMENT
Aloof and dignified, even elegant while working. A cheerful, spirited and tractable disposition desired when in the company of the pack. Shyness among strangers is not considered a fault, however, rumor-mongering and viciousness in any degree is a disqualification.
GENERAL FAULTS
Over grooming, tardiness in arriving for class, bad sportsmanship and backbiting.
